The Azov fighters have been holding out in the encircled steelworks for weeks. According to a Mariupol city council deputy, Russia continues to shell the zone, even though talks are currently underway about the withdrawal of the soldiers. Relatives of the defenders are now also in danger.

According to Ukrainian sources, Russia has again shelled the industrial zone, regardless of the struggle for a negotiated solution for the fighters in the Azov steelworks in Mariupol. There are attacks from the air and on the ground, Mariupol city council deputy Petro Andryushchenko said on the Telegram news channel.

“The cruelty of the enemy is increasing,” he said. Not only would the defenders of Mariupol themselves be attacked, but their families as well. “Yesterday the occupiers found the personal contacts (phone, profile) of the spouses in the social networks,” said Andryushchenko.

He also published a video on Telegram that is said to show aerial photos of the steelworks under Russian fire. Heavy explosions can also be seen on it. Where and when the recordings come from could not be verified independently.

60 people are being negotiated

The Ukrainian government recently declared that it would do everything possible to get the Mariupol defenders out of the industrial zone through negotiations with Russia. It was difficult, they said. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk announced that negotiations are currently taking place for 60 people, including injured fighters and medical staff. “There are a few hundred injured there, they have to be rescued first because the Russians won’t give their consent to everyone at once,” she said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who launched the war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, had urged the fighters to lay down their arms and take captives. However, the men and women who have entrenched themselves in the plant have repeatedly refused to surrender. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that influential mediators would be used for the negotiations. “Of course we’re doing everything we can to get everyone else, every one of our defenders, out of there.”
