For once, dark apocalyptic scenes in charcoal and ink encase the front and back pages of the NZZ on Sunday from May 15, 2022. More demonic figures, dancing skeletons and smaller interventions can be found full-page and also in the margins of the art edition. The drawings are the work of the Zurich artist Harald Naegeli. Works that were created between 2018 and 2022 are used, some of them especially for this edition. In an interview with Peer Teuwsen, Head of the Culture Department NZZ on Sundayand NZZ magazineThe artist explains to editor Urs Bühler: “You could also call it the demonic nature of the unconscious. The theme is death and the present war.”

Harald Naegeli became internationally known with his distinctive graffiti. In his works with charcoal and ink, he developed his own design language, which can also be recognized in his graffiti. The culture part NZZ on Sunday is dedicated entirely to the artist in this art edition. In addition to the two-page interview, readers can expect a portrait by Urs Bühler of the 82-year-old and an article about his graphic work NZZ on Sunday-Art critic Gerhard Mack. After his return to his native town, Urs Bühler regularly visited the artist in his studio on Hottingerplatz. He says of the collaboration: “We have won an artist for this project whose life story and artistic career are fatefully linked to Zurich. It is not for nothing that Harald Naegeli is also referred to as the forefather of graffiti art: his sovereign style has secured his most famous figures a place in the collective memory, while at the same time his works in public space have polarized for over four decades. In this particular NZZ on Sunday-edition one can now discover his qualities as a versatile draftsman.»
