On vacation for more than a month now, the Lakers are taking time before really launching their offseason. However, it seems that their work so far is starting to pay off, with two potential recruits getting closer to the franchise!
While some of their rivals still dream of the NBA title, they simply hope to be able to claim it next year. The Lakers have big ambitions for the 2022-23 season, but have to change a lot of things in their team to meet them. However, so far, no arrival has been observed in Los Angeles. However, this could quickly change in the coming days.
Two coaches on pole to take the lead of the Lakers
Following Frank Vogel’s free departure, the search for a new head coach was immediately identified by the Angelinos as the first step in rebuilding. Several candidates for the job have already been interviewed, allowing LA leaders to specify their requirements. Jovan Buha undertook to report them in his latest paper to The Athletic :
Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka made it clear that the team will take its time in its search, and that one of the most important qualities for its future coach would be serious. That suggests a coach with experience, but several of the inexperienced candidates they’ve been rumored to be linked to are former players who command respect.
The huge call from the foot of a LeBron rival to join the Lakers!
As such, two of their targets would have taken the lead on the competition according to the journalist!
The Lakers have already been linked to a dozen candidates for their position as head coach, but none of them have emerged as the main contender. (Darvin) Ham and Terry Stotts are arguably the closest to the current favorites.
Two profiles a priori very different, but which seem to charm the Purple & Gold. First of all, that of Darvin Ham is intriguing, since the former NBA winger would get his first opportunity at the head of a bench. It would seem anyway that his qualities are numerous, since the Hornets have also included him in their shortlist. Despite everything, the uncertainty that his appointment would entail could cost him in this fight.
For his part, Terry Stotts has a much richer CV in the league. With 13 seasons to his credit as head coach, the latter left his main memory of his time in Portland, marked by 8 playoff qualifications in 9 seasons there. Nevertheless, would he be able to manage a group full of stars such as LeBron James and Anthony Davis ? Nothing is less sure.
Things may have become clearer in the quest to coach the Lakers, the candidates who seem to stand as favorites remain surrounded by doubts. Not sure that Angelinos fans will jump for joy if one of them is finally chosen!
