Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov have not experienced all the drought of the Florida Panthers who had not reached the second round of the playoffs since 1996, but the relief was present in the two forwards.

Following Carter Verhaeghe’s freeing goal in overtime to give the Panthers victory in Game 6 against the Washington Capitals, both players were careful to note that this victory, while only a step towards the ultimate goal was meaningful.

“It’s a weight off our shoulders. We lost last year and this year we just needed to win. Today it happened. Might as well go all the way now. We start with the second round now,” said Huberdeau, who has been with the team since the 2012-2013 campaign.

” It’s incredible! I don’t realize it yet. Since the beginning of my career here, I have never passed the second round. We still have a lot to do and we’ll be back to work tomorrow,” shared Barkov, who was playing a fourth series in a Panthers uniform like his teammate.

“I hope it’s a relief for players who have been here a long time like Barkov, Ekblad and Huberdeau. They have to feel good and it will take the pressure off them, probably a bit too much,” said head coach Andrew Brunette.

Giroux finds his captain alone

Even if he has just joined the ranks of the Panthers, Claude Giroux felt what this victory could represent for the organization. The forward contributed fully to this success with a goal and two assists in Game 6, including the one that set the stage for the winning goal. In the locker room with his teammates, he felt the excitement after the expectation of winning a series.

” I feel it! Players were talking about it, but not in a negative way. We wanted to go ahead and we are in the second round. We have momentum and we have to stay focused now,” he stressed.

Each of the people who appeared before the reporters after the game refused to speculate too much about the possible confrontation in the second round which will be against the winner of the series between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The seventh game of this confrontation will take place on Saturday.
