Russia welcomes ‘sincere and friendly relations’ with Algeria – Agence Afrique

Russia expressed on Tuesday its “satisfaction” with the relations it has with Algeria, through the voice of its Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, on a two-day visit to this North African country.

During a press briefing, held after a meeting with the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, Lavrov indicated that “Algeria and Russia are linked by sincere and friendly”.

He mentioned the signing of a new document serving as a basis for bilateral relations. “We reaffirmed today the importance of joint action to strengthen bilateral cooperation through the signing of a new document that will serve as the basis for these relations,” he said, while specifying that the Declaration of Strategic Cooperation signed between the two countries in 2001 constitutes “the foundation” of these relations.

Sergei Lavrov’s visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Algeria. The head of Russian diplomacy affirmed that the two countries will celebrate together this event which coincides with the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s independence.

Lavrov also announced an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to his counterpart Tebboune. This initiative is part of “the concern to develop relations at the political level and to strengthen commercial, economic, military, artistic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation”, he explained.

Lavrov’s visit to Algeria also comes at a time when Russia, which has declared war on Ukraine, is facing international sanctions. Algeria being, like Russia, a major exporter of gas and oil, many European countries are seeking to do without Russian gas and partly compensate for it with Algerian gas.

Algeria, which supplies only around 11% of the gas consumed in Europe, against 47% for Russia, acknowledges that it does not have the additional export capacities to claim to be able to replace its Russian partner.
