At least 10 dead after shooting at US supermarket in New York

According to media reports, at least ten people died after shots were fired in a supermarket in the US city of Buffalo. In addition to the US news agency AP, this was also reported on Saturday by the TV channels NBC and ABC, citing unnamed sources.

It was initially unclear how many people were injured and whether the death toll could rise. The New York City police had previously reported that the shooter had been arrested. NBC, on the other hand, initially reported that the perpetrator, who entered the supermarket with a gun and military-style equipment, was killed. Apparently, the perpetrators had streamed the shots live on the Internet.

Protect in custody

The Buffalo shooter has been taken into custody, according to the city mayor. “The shooter was not from this community,” said Byron Brown (63) on Saturday afternoon (local time) at a press conference. “The shooter traveled hours from outside of this community to commit this crime against the people of Buffalo.”

The supermarket is located several miles north of downtown Buffalo in an area primarily populated by black people. “Why does a white man come here and shoot in a black supermarket,” said a local resident on local television.

Like in a “horror movie”

A police officer described the crime scene in The Buffalo News newspaper: “It’s like walking into a horror movie, but everything is real.” The newspaper also quoted a supermarket employee who said he had gone into the cold room shortly before the incident. “I hid myself. I just hid. I didn’t want to leave the room.”

The governor of the state of New York, Kathy Hochul (63), wrote on Twitter on Saturday that she was monitoring the situation very closely after the incident at a local grocery store. “If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow instructions from law enforcement and local authorities.” (SDA)
