  • At least eight people have been shot dead in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

  • Several US media report unanimously on the incident.

  • Local police report that the perpetrator has been arrested.

According to media reports, at least eight people died after shots were fired in a supermarket in the US city of Buffalo. In addition to the US news agency AP, this was also reported on Saturday by the TV channels NBC and ABC, citing unnamed sources.

It was initially unclear how many people were injured and whether the death toll could rise. The New York City police had previously reported that the shooter had been arrested. NBC, on the other hand, initially reported that the perpetrator, who entered the supermarket with a gun and military-style equipment, was killed.

Did the perpetrator film himself during the killing spree?

One of the investigators told the AP the investigation is still in its early stages but a racial motive has not been ruled out. The attacker stormed into the Tops Friendly Market in a black-majority neighborhood in Buffalo and may have streamed the attack live on the internet. The investigator said they are investigating whether he also posted any statements on the Internet.

Rifle, combat gear and helmet

Braedyn Kephart and Shane Hill, both 20, pulled into the supermarket parking lot just as the gunman was coming out of the building. He was white, in his 20s, wearing riot gear including a helmet and carrying a rifle, they told the AP. “He took off his helmet, dropped the gun and was thrown to the ground by the police.” The police cordoned off the crime scene.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul wrote on Twitter on Saturday that she was closely monitoring the situation after the incident at a local grocery store. “If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow instructions from law enforcement and local authorities.”

In March 2021, there was a similar attack at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, killing ten people. Investigators in this case have not yet released any information about the possible motive.
