Buffalo: Dead after shooting in supermarket, FBI alerted

Ten people were killed and three injured in a gun attack at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. This was announced by police chief Joseph Gramaglia yesterday. The 18-year-old gunman was taken into custody, according to Mayor Byron Brown. A racist motive is also being investigated.

“The shooter was not from this community,” Brown explained at a news conference. “The shooter traveled hours from outside of this community to commit this crime against the people of Buffalo.” According to police, the gunman was heavily armed and opened fire in the supermarket parking lot.

According to authorities, the shooter had a camera and was wearing a helmet – he filmed the act and broadcast it live on a social network. There is “certain evidence” that points to a racist act, it said. The majority of the victims were black. According to initial findings, the shooter acted alone.

“We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism,” said an FBI investigator. The neighborhood is mostly inhabited by blacks.

“It’s like a horror movie”

A police officer described the crime scene to The Buffalo News newspaper: “It’s like walking into a horror movie, but everything is real.” The newspaper also quoted a supermarket worker who said he was in the store shortly before the incident gone to the fridge. “I hid myself. I just hid. I didn’t want to leave the room,” he said. The host of the local TV station WKBW said, visibly shocked, that her husband had visited the supermarket about an hour before the crime.

The governor of the state of New York, Kathy Hochul, wrote on the short message service Twitter that she was monitoring the situation very closely after the incident. “If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow directions from law enforcement and local authorities.”
